Free Linux web hosting control panels are what you install after a cPanel invoice lands and before you remember that free does not include a restore. This is a 2026 list of panels you can put on a Linux VPS without a WebPros account meter: some GPL, some freeware, some free-until-the-module-drawer. LogicWeb shared and reseller stay cPanel. This list is for the guest you own.
Snapshot the VPS first. Then pick one panel. Installing three is how you get two nginxes and a mystery PHP-FPM.
What “free” actually means
Free Linux web hosting control panels split into three piles. GPL you can fork: Hestia, 1Panel OSS, ISPConfig, Froxlor, Webmin/Virtualmin. Vendor-free cores with a paid drawer: CWP Pro, aaPanel plugins, FASTPANEL extras, CyberPanel’s $59 modules. And “the panel is free, the web server you wanted is not”: CyberPanel plus LiteSpeed Enterprise. cPanel Solo at $29.99 is not on this list. Plesk Web Admin at €12.04 is not on this list. AdminBolt at $20 is not on this list. DirectAdmin is not on this list. Those are leases. Start with cPanel vs Plesk if that was the actual tab.
A hosting panel means sites, certificates, usually mail, usually DNS. An app panel means Docker and git. Mixing them in one roundup is how Coolify ends up next to Exim. Coolify is excellent. It is not a free Linux web hosting control panel in the WHM sense. We left it off the ten on purpose. Same for Cockpit, which is a server HUD, and for WebPros’s WP Squared, which is not free.
You still pay for the machine, the addresses, and the backup. A $0 panel on a prefix you cannot explain is how mail dies. KVM with two IPv4 on v.box is a product. The panel is software. Confirm the path on an IP lookup.
The ten
1. Hestia Control Panel
The GPL fork of the old Vesta line, and the usual honest answer for one WordPress box you own. Nginx or Apache, mail, DNS, a UI a human can learn in an afternoon. No license invoice. No WHM. If you wanted accounts to resell, stop — that is cPanel. If you wanted free and boring on a v.box, start here.
2. CyberPanel (OpenLiteSpeed)
Free panel, free OLS, LSCache as the main event. Optional LiteSpeed Enterprise and $59/year add-ons if you outgrew open. Best when the site is WordPress and you wanted that cache without a cPanel Admin invoice. Mail exists. Mail tickets also exist. Our shared nodes already combine cPanel with LiteSpeed, so CyberPanel is a VPS choice, not a reason to leave WordPress hosting.
3. Control Web Panel (CWP) Free
The dense EL panel. Alma, Rocky, CloudLinux. Mail, DNS, SSL, PHP, CSF-shaped habits, a module drawer that becomes Pro at $1.49/month if you need it. Free core is real. CWP is for people who wanted a hosting-company UI without WebPros. It is not calmer than Hestia. It is fuller. Full is how people end up with two web servers on one guest.
4. 1Panel
GPLv3, Go, Docker, 165-plus apps, WordPress as a container-shaped install, five AI agents in OSS, Pro/Ent if you needed multi-node. Not a mail host. Not WHM. The right free Linux panel when the job is apps and agents, the wrong one when the job is mailboxes. GitHub energy is not a PTR record.
5. aaPanel
The international face of BT-Panel. Fast to click, easy to over-install. Free core, paid plugins. One-click stacks are how you get three databases and two nginxes. Fine on a lab VPS. Name the production window before you use it as a cPanel stand-in.
6. CloudPanel
Nginx-forward, free, PHP and Node, no mail stack pretending to be cPanel. If you wanted webmail and Autodiscover, this is the wrong aisle. If you wanted a clean reverse proxy in front of apps on Ubuntu, it is a good, small panel. CloudPanel plus a separate mail plan is a valid architecture. CloudPanel plus hope is not.
7. Webmin + Virtualmin GPL
The Unix admin’s panel: powerful, ugly, still there in 2026. Virtualmin GPL is the free virtual hosting layer on Webmin. You can restore it from a note you wrote yourself. That is the feature. People who wanted pretty bounce to Hestia. People who wanted a lease bounce back to cPanel. People who wanted to understand the box stay.
8. ISPConfig 3
GPL, multi-server, mail, DNS, a reseller-shaped tree that is not WHM. If you needed a few servers under one UI and you would not pay DirectAdmin, ISPConfig is the adult GPL answer. It will not hold your hand. It will not meter accounts at $0.49.
9. Froxlor
Smaller GPL panel, PHP hosting, mail, a modest UI. Fine for a handful of sites on Debian or Ubuntu if you did not want Hestia’s defaults or ISPConfig’s breadth. Not a WordPress-only tool. Not a Docker cockpit. A panel you can actually read.
10. FASTPANEL
Free core that still shows up on cheap VPS templates in 2026, with paid extras for the rest of the drawer. Not GPL in the Hestia sense. Treat it as freeware with a store, not as a foundation you cannot leave. If the host preinstalled it, you can use it. If you are choosing greenfield, prefer Hestia or CyberPanel unless you already know FASTPANEL’s habits.
Honorable mentions, not the ten, among other free Linux web hosting control panels: OpenPanel (young GPL, watch it), Ajenti (admin HUD more than hosting), Vesta (use Hestia), Sentora (quiet), KeyHelp’s free tier if you were already on it. Docker-only tools belong with Coolify and Dokploy. This list is hosting-shaped: files, sites, usually mail.
How to pick one on a VPS
If you needed WHM, none of these free Linux web hosting control panels are the product. Reseller hosting is. If you needed one WordPress and mail, Hestia. If you needed LSCache as identity, CyberPanel. If you needed a dense EL hosting UI, CWP. If you needed Docker apps, 1Panel. If you needed Nginx without mail, CloudPanel. If you needed to understand the box, Webmin. If you needed multi-server GPL, ISPConfig.
Do not install three. Virtualizor on our VPS already reboots, reinstals, and offers VNC — that is the hypervisor panel, not the site panel. Pick a site panel or pick SSH. Shared web hosting will remain cPanel regardless of this list, because the humans who open tickets were trained on it, and because we copy that pack for free.
Free Linux web hosting control panels are free the way a table saw is free if you already own the garage. The garage is the VPS. We will still answer the ticket when the installer finishes. We would rather it be a restore than a mystery nginx.
Among free Linux web hosting control panels, Hestia is the default I would install for a friend who wanted mail and WordPress. CyberPanel if they already live in LSCache. CWP if they wanted every toggle. 1Panel if the box is really an app host. Everything else on this list is a valid exception, not a default.
Do not treat FASTPANEL or aaPanel as “close enough to cPanel.” They are not. Clients who expect a cPanel URL, a certain file manager, and Softaculous will open tickets that no free panel will close. Keep those humans on shared cPanel.
The phrase free Linux web hosting control panels also attracts people who wanted WHMCS, branding, and a reseller tree at $0. ISPConfig is the closest GPL shape. It is still not WHM. If the business is selling hosting, pay for the panel that matches the business or buy reseller from us.
