OS templates and rebuilds
What a VPS rebuild keeps and what it wipes

A VPS rebuild wipes the guest disk and installs a fresh OS template. Your IPv4 address usually stays the same, but your files, configs, and SSH host keys do not. Think of it as a new computer that keeps the same network address. It is not an upgrade path, and it will not free space on a full disk unless you copy data off first.

Templates differ by design. AlmaLinux, Ubuntu, Debian, and panel images each bring their own package tools and defaults. Choose the template that matches the runbooks you already use, so you are not mixing apt habits with a dnf system. When the panel offers virtio drivers, accept them for normal KVM performance.

What survives a VPS rebuild

What usually survives is the guest record in the panel, the assigned IPs, bandwidth accounting, and any backups stored off the server. What does not survive is the root filesystem, crontabs, local mail, web server configs you never copied, Let’s Encrypt live files, and Docker volumes left only on that disk. If the panel offers a snapshot, take it in the minutes before you click Rebuild. That snapshot is your safety net if something important was still on the box.

Two mistakes show up often. One is rebuilding only to “fix a full disk” without moving files first, which leaves you with a clean empty disk and nothing recovered. The other is treating rebuild like a kernel or package update. A normal update keeps your system; a rebuild replaces it.

After the rebuild finishes

Your SSH host key will have changed, so clients that connected before will warn until you verify the new fingerprint from the panel or console. Reinstall your SSH keys, restore firewall rules, and confirm reverse DNS if mail still uses this IP. AutoSSL will need a fresh HTTP-01 challenge. Cron jobs will not return on their own, so recreate them from notes or backups.

Pick a template and treat the button carefully

Write down which template you chose. Later you will need to know whether the guest is AlmaLinux 9 or Ubuntu 24 when a guide says to run a package command. A VPS rebuild is simpler than a dedicated reinstall through IPMI, and it is also easier to start by accident. Use the rebuild button only when you truly want a new OS on the same address.
