An ASN is the number BGP uses as the origin of a prefix. When you ask us to announce space, you either route it under your own ASN or you bundle it with a VPS or dedicated server that we announce from ours. Those are different sessions and different ROAs, so say which one you mean in the ticket. If both of us originate the same prefix, parts of the internet will treat it as invalid.
When we announce from our ASN
We originate the prefix from our ASN on sessions we already run. You use the addresses on a VPS or a dedicated chassis that we route for you. We handle LOA, WHOIS as end user, rDNS, IRR, and RPKI so they name our ASN. You do not need your own router for this path. You do need to stop any leftover announcement from a lab, a colo, or a previous host. Two origins for one prefix often produce an RPKI invalid state and a hard-to-debug outage.
When you announce from your ASN
You already hold an ASN. We issue an LOA and coordinate the ROA so it names your ASN. You bring up a BGP session with us, or with another party we have agreed to in writing. Filters, IRR origin AS, and maxLength stay your responsibility and must match the objects. We do not also originate the prefix unless the ticket clearly asked for that. A leftover announcement from our side while you go live causes the same invalid state as the reverse case.
What to put in the ticket
A VPS with two IPv4 addresses is not “your ASN.” Those addresses sit on our network and use our origin unless you asked for a BGP session. A lease bundled with dedicated service is still our origin for the same reason. Peering policy, IX ports, and looking-glass logins are not part of a standard guest. You either get a working default route, or you run a BGP project. Those requests should not share one vague subject line.
Send the exact prefix, the ASN you intend (yours or ours), and whether mail will use the space. Do not write only “the IP.” If you need more-specifics out of the block, that is a separate length discussion on top of origin, not a second origin. If you do not have an ASN, bundling with our servers is normal. Most customers never need their own ASN; you only need one when you run BGP yourself.
