Short on time? Install Astra. That is the first pick among free WordPress themes we still put on client sites in 2026: a million-plus installs, a Customizer agencies already know, and a free zip that is a real theme rather than a demo lock. Kadence if you wanted the same job with a cleaner block kit. GeneratePress if you wanted almost no CSS.
Every theme below is in the WordPress.org directory. Each section has one screenshot — the official image that ships with the theme — plus the vendor site, the directory page, and a live preview. Install counts and last-updated dates are from the WordPress.org API on 1 September 2026.
One naming trap before the list: there is no Twenty Twenty-Six. WordPress 6.9 and 7.0 both shipped without a new default. Twenty Twenty-Five is still what a fresh install gets. If a roundup ranks a theme the directory does not list, do not download its zip.
Putting WordPress on WordPress hosting here? Appearance → Themes → Add New. Search the slug. Do not FTP a “NULLED Pro” pack.

Quick picks
If you only needed one of these free WordPress themes tonight, use the first column.
| First pick | Second pick | Third pick | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theme | Astra | Kadence | GeneratePress |
| Best for | Business, Woo, agencies | Woo and service sites | Speed, developers |
| Active installs | 1M+ | 500k+ | 500k+ |
| Rating | 4.9 (6,517) | 4.9 (452) | 5.0 (1,426) |

| FSE | Partial | Partial | Partial |
The other seven are not leftovers. Twenty Twenty-Five is the default you already have. Blocksy and Neve are the generous free tiers. Ollie is the honest block starter. Hello Elementor is a blank canvas and nothing else. OceanWP and Storefront are the Woo inheritances. Read the section that matches the job.
1. Astra
Astra is the theme we reach for when someone needs a business or WooCommerce site this week and does not want a page-builder religion. Brainstorm Force keeps it in the directory. The free zip is a real theme. Header and footer controls in free are enough for a lot of client work; the full header builder and the extra starter library sit in Astra Pro.

Astra is version 4.13.10, last updated 19 August 2026, 1+ million active installs, 4.9 stars on 6,517 ratings. Starter sites cover brochure, shop, and blog. Among free WordPress themes with a million installs, this is the one agencies already know how to hand over.
What works
- Starter sites you can import without a second invoice.
- WooCommerce that does not need a special “shop theme.”
- A Customizer most teams have already used.
- A free version that still looks like a site after you skip Pro.
What to watch
- Pro is where the header/footer tricks live. Budget it or don’t promise it.
- Starter sites like to suggest companion plugins. You can decline.

2. Kadence
Kadence is the move from Astra when you wanted the same outcomes with a block-first kit and a quieter Customizer. Kadence WP (StellarWP) ships the theme in the directory. WooCommerce and service businesses are the sweet spot. Among free WordPress themes that are not Astra, this is the one we suggest next.

Kadence is version 1.5.2, last updated 24 July 2026, 500,000+ installs, 4.9 stars. Accessibility-ready is in the directory tags. If you needed Elementor, this is the wrong aisle — Hello Elementor is that canvas, not Kadence.
What works
- Block-first editing without throwing Gutenberg out.
- Woo and service layouts that do not look like 2016.
- A free theme that is not a demo lock.
What to watch
- Pro is how you get the rest of the kit. Decide that on day one.
- Kadence Blocks is a plugin. Keep it updated like one.

3. GeneratePress
GeneratePress is the performance favorite: tiny, boring, excellent. Tom Usborne still ships it. Free GeneratePress is enough for a blog or a docs site. The site library and extra modules are GeneratePress Premium. If a speed thread from 2022 and a speed thread from 2026 agree on one of these free WordPress themes, it is usually this one.

GeneratePress is version 3.6.1. Last directory update 1 December 2025 — slower than Astra, not abandoned. 500,000+ installs, 5.0 stars on 1,426 ratings. Do not expect a hundred starter sites in the free zip. That is not the product.
What works
- Almost no CSS. Pages feel fast because they are light.
- A Customizer that stays out of the way.
- A 5-star rating that has held for years.
What to watch
- The site library is paid. Free is a framework, not a template mill.
- Releases are slower than Astra. Check the last-updated date; it is still current.

4. Twenty Twenty-Five
Twenty Twenty-Five is the default WordPress still ships in 2026. Full site editing, block patterns, no vendor account. Use it to learn the Site Editor or to ship a site that should look like WordPress, not like a template mill. Skip it if you needed eighty starter sites and a Woo header builder — that is Astra or Kadence.

Twenty Twenty-Five is version 1.5, last updated 20 May 2026, 1+ million installs. There is no vendor homepage because it is core. Twenty Twenty-Four 1.6 is still maintained if you already built on it — do not migrate a live Site Editor install just to change the year in the name. Templates do not always travel. Stage first.
What works
- It is already installed. No extra zip.
- Full site editing without a third-party account.
- A design that reads as editorial, not as a dashboard clone.
What to watch
- Sparse starter templates compared with Astra.
- Do not confuse it with Twenty Twenty-Six. That theme does not exist.

5. Blocksy
Blocksy is the generous free tier. Creative Themes puts more knobs in the free zip than Astra does: headers, Woo, dark mode, conditions. That is the appeal and the trap. Easy to over-click. If you wanted GeneratePress restraint with more UI, try this before you buy anyone’s Pro. It is one of the few free WordPress themes where the free drawer is actually the product.

Blocksy is version 2.1.55, last updated 27 August 2026, 300,000+ installs, 5.0 stars on 872 ratings. Accessibility-ready. Pro is the usual yearly theme invoice if you outgrow free.
What works
- A free tier that is actually feature-rich.
- Woo and blog layouts without an extra builder.
- Updates that still land (27 August 2026).
What to watch
- Too many options on day one. Pick a header and stop.
- Pro exists. You do not have to open that tab.

6. Neve
Neve is ThemeIsle’s fast starter: mobile-first, starter library, FSE is not the point. Use it when you wanted templates and you did not want Astra’s gravity. It is a fair pick among free WordPress themes if the brief was “starter sites, light default, no Astra.” ThemeIsle will offer Otter Blocks and a Pro upsell. You do not have to take either on day one.

Neve is version 4.2.11, last updated 12 August 2026, 200,000+ installs, 4.7 stars on 1,281 ratings. Accessibility-ready. Skip it if you were trying to build a pure block theme — that is Ollie or Twenty Twenty-Five.
What works
- Starter sites that import quickly.
- A light default for a brochure or a blog.
- A vendor that still ships updates.
What to watch
- Otter Blocks and Neve Pro are optional. Treat them as optional.
- Not the FSE story. Pick Ollie or Twenty Twenty-Five for that.

7. Ollie
Ollie is Mike McAlister’s full-site-editing starter. Smaller install base, honest scope: patterns, no page builder, designed as a block theme rather than a Customizer theme with FSE bolted on. Install it if you wanted to learn FSE on something that is not the default. Do not treat it as a replacement for the three free WordPress themes at the top of this list unless the job is “block theme, not core.”

Ollie is version 1.6.1, last updated 24 July 2026, 5,000+ installs, 5.0 stars on 36 ratings. Young ecosystem. That is the trade: less gravity, fewer Stack Overflow answers.
What works
- A block theme that is not Twenty Twenty-Five.
- Patterns instead of a page builder.
- A 5-star directory rating, even on a small sample.
What to watch
- 5,000 installs is not Astra’s support gravity.
- You will do more in the Site Editor. That is the point.

8. Hello Elementor
Hello Elementor is not a theme in the GeneratePress sense. It is a blank canvas so Elementor has somewhere to sit. The screenshot is a white page with a “Create with Elementor AI” prompt because that is the honest demo. If you are not using Elementor, pick anything else on this list. If you are using Elementor, Hello is the correct parent — do not stack it on Astra “for extra features.”

Hello Elementor is version 3.5.1, last updated 25 August 2026, 1+ million installs, 4.2 stars. The million installs are Elementor users, not people who wanted a finished theme.
What works
- The right parent if Elementor is already the builder.
- Almost no theme CSS fighting the builder.
What to watch
- Useless without Elementor. That is by design.
- Do not pair it with a second “real” theme.

9. OceanWP
OceanWP is still everywhere. Old WooCommerce stacks still run it. The free theme is fine. The extension catalog is how a checkout picks up 800 ms. If you inherit OceanWP, audit the extras before you add another. If you are greenfield in 2026, Kadence or Astra will usually hurt less.

OceanWP is version 4.2.4, last updated 31 August 2026, 500,000+ installs, 4.9 stars on 5,714 ratings. The rating is for the theme, not for a twelve-extension stack.
What works
- A known Woo parent if the shop already lives here.
- Still updated (31 August 2026).
What to watch
- Extensions. Each one is another plugin.
- Greenfield shops should start on Kadence or Astra instead.

10. Storefront
Storefront is Automattic’s WooCommerce default: official, plain, Woo-shaped. It looks like 2017 until you work. That is not an insult; it is a stable parent for a catalog. Kadence and Astra have the Woo drawers most shops actually use in 2026. Use Storefront when you wanted the official Woo parent and you were willing to design. Do not use it as a “free Elementor shop theme.”

Storefront is version 4.6.2, last updated 9 December 2025, 90,000+ installs, 4.5 stars. Official does not mean fashionable. Official means Woo will not orphan the parent tomorrow.
What works
- The official WooCommerce parent.
- A predictable markup target if you were going to write CSS anyway.
What to watch
- Looks dated out of the box. Budget design time.
- Last directory update December 2025. Still maintained; not the fast lane.

How to install
Install free WordPress themes from wp-admin, not from a Drive folder. The directory page is the source of truth for the last updated date and the PHP version.
- Appearance → Themes → Add New. Search the slug (astra, kadence, generatepress, twentytwentysix will 404 — use twentytwentyfive).
- Open the WordPress.org page linked above. Check last updated, PHP, and the support forum’s last week.
- Use the live preview on wp-themes.com before you switch production.
- Child-theme only if you will edit PHP. Site Editor and Customizer changes do not need a child theme. A backup does.
- Stage the switch. Menus, widgets, and template parts do not always travel. WP Toolkit clone, then production.
A random zip does not update through wp-admin. Directory free WordPress themes do. Our cPanel migration copies the account; it will not pick Kadence for you.
What to skip
- Nulled “Pro” zips. They are malware with a screenshot stolen from the vendor. That is not how free WordPress themes are distributed.
- Anything last updated in 2022. The directory tells you on the theme page.
- Themes that require five companion plugins before the homepage renders.
- A custom theme an agent wrote and nobody staged.
- Any article that still ranks Twenty Twenty-Six as a download. That slug 404s.
WooCommerce on these free WordPress themes: Storefront is official and plain. Kadence and Astra have the drawers most shops use. GeneratePress will do Woo if you build. OceanWP will do Woo if you refuse the extension catalog.
Pick one. Astra or Kadence if you needed templates. GeneratePress if you needed less CSS. Twenty Twenty-Five or Ollie if you needed a block theme. Blocksy if you wanted more knobs without going Pro on day one. Hello only with Elementor. That is the list of free WordPress themes that still deserve a fresh install in 2026.
